Introduction to Readicide Assignment

Reading is a part of every aspect of life.  Every subject area, every test, every day requires us to be able to decode, comprehend and infer from text all around us.  Yet, The National Assessment of Educational Progress shows that secondary school students are reading significantly below expected levels, while The National Assessment of Adult Literacy finds that literacy scores of high school graduates dropped between 1992 and 2003 (Gallagher 2).  As part of our professional development this year, we provided you with Kelly Gallagher's Readicide as an impetus for reflection and discussion about how we can support reading across the curriculum at Ridge View High School.  This blog is your opportunity to share your thoughts, ideas and hopes regarding this critical aspect of our students' educational life.  Please reflect herein on any personal connections you made to your unique classroom environment, your educational setting, or the larger context of our state education.  Post submissions should be completed no later than Friday, May 13.  If you have any questions about how to post, please see me or MaryAnn Sansonetti in A-0.  Thanks!
